STATE OF EMERGENCY  (posted 3/20/2020)

Covington Township has declared a State of Emergency.  The Board of Supervisors are working closely with the township’s EMA Coordinator, along with Police Department and Fire Company to ensure the safety of our residents.  This State of Emergency is in affect until April 30, 2020 and it can be extended or rescinded.  To view the declaration, click ⇒ Declaration of a Disaster Emergency for Covington Twp PA 

 

PUBLIC NOTICE:  (Posted 3/13/2020) UPDATED 3-26-2020   Restricted office hours

The Covington Township Board of Supervisors have closed office hours to the public due to the growing concerns with the coronavirus (COVID-19) in order to protect the health of our residents.

This closure will be in effect until April 30, 2020 as per the Declaration of Disaster Emergency, which can be extended or rescinded. This posting will be updated as needed.

Township employees will be working remotely during this time and can be reached by calling Kate at 570-842-8336, or Melinda at 570-842-0457, or emailing us at office@covingtontwp.org

Spring clean up tickets can be obtained by emailing mthomas@covingtontwp.org or calling 570-842-0457 with your tax map number, name, address and phone number.  Your cleanup permit will then be mailed to you.

N.P. Senior Center will be closed until April 30, 2020 as per the Declaration of Disaster Emergency.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES:    (posted 3/4/2020)

The Covington Township Board of Supervisors will be accepting applications for the positions of full time secretary and part time treasurer.  All interested persons please email your letter of interest and resume to ktierney@covingtontwp.org.  Compensation is commensurate with experience. 

 

Moffat Park  The park is open to all residents of the North Pocono area from dawn to dusk.  It is located off Route 435 at 20 Moffat Drive, behind the Moffat Estate mansion.  The grounds consist of 40 manicured and natural acreage including a stream with a covered bridge and pond.  At the pond site is a small screened in gazebo.  A larger pavilion with kitchen facilities is available to rent for parties and events.  There are also walking trails, a children’s recreation area and Bocce Ball Court.

Children’s Recreation Area The recreation area is available for children of all ages from dawn to dusk daily.  Parental supervision is required.

Pavilion Rental  The pavilion on the property is available for rentals to residents of the North Pocono community (Clifton, Covington, Elmhurst, Madison, Moscow, Roaring Brook, and Spring Brook) for weddings, parties, community functions and events, as well as, corporate use.  The pavilion agreement with fee schedule can be found under Forms & Ordinances (above), then select ‘Pavilion Contract’ (listed under Other Forms).  To check on available dates, contact Melinda at (570) 840-6959. 

Recycling Information & Brochure Open on the 1st & 3rd Saturday of the month from 9-11 a.m.  The recycling center is located off Route 435 in Daleville behind and to the left of the Police Department.  

The guidelines from the Lackawanna County Recycling Center have changed and became much stricter.  People are contaminating entire dumpsters by depositing items that are not acceptable.  Subsequently, the Recycling Center is now rejecting entire truckloads of (contaminated) recyclables which results in the township paying fines and garbage disposal fees.


These are the ONLY items we are able to accept:

  • Glass – bottles and jars only.  NO lids!  NO broken glass, NO windows, NO glasses, etc.)
  • Aluminum and steel / tin cans (Throw away lids unless attached)
  • Plastic – bottles and jars. NO lids! (i.e. milk, juice, water, detergent/cleaners, soda)
  • Newspaper, magazines, catalogs, phone books and brown bags.  Place in brown bag or bundle only!
  • Office paper (computer paper, mail, envelopes)
  • Shredded paper (place in clear plastic bag ONLY)
  • Cardboard boxes only (heavy shipping boxes) All boxes must be flattened and bundled or, place inside a larger box.

ALL glass, plastic and cans MUST be empty of ALL food and liquids, then thoroughly rinsed out before recycling!

PLEASE STOP DUMPING YOUR GARBAGE OUTSIDE OUR BUILDINGS! 

The following items are NOT recyclable:
Margarine tubs, yogurt containers, food wrappers, disposable dishes & cups, snack bags, straws, utensils, cling wrap, windows, mugs, glassware, drinking glasses, plastic bags, ceramic items, styrofoam, toys, plant & flower pots, light bulbs, deli containers, bakery containers & boxes, berry containers, paint cans, motor oil or chemical containers, food wrappers, bubble wrap, books, Tyvek envelopes (tear resistant envelopes), take out containers.

Spring Clean-Up Please see the above Public Notice. 

At this time the township does not have any public office hours.  You can obtain your cleanup permit from Melinda by emailing mthomas@covingtontwp.org (or call 570-842-0457) with your tax map number, name, address, and phone number.  Your cleanup permit will then be mailed to you.  

Spring cleanup will take place on Friday, May 16th & Saturday, May 17th from 8am – 5pm.

The clean up is generally held for two days in mid May allowing you two trips to the site.  Please check the township calendar for exact dates.  The clean up is held behind the Covington Fire Station.  Entrance is via Dorantown Road and exit onto Route 502 across from the entrance to Bill’s Shopping Plaza.  The township encourages you to use the clean up to remove any unsightly junk and debris from your property.  A permit and proof of residency are required.  The property cannot be a vacant lot or business and the property owner must personally pick up their own permit.  The police department will inspect and enforce all permits.  A charge of $3.00 will be in effect for car tires, $6.00 for light truck tires and $20.00 for heavy truck tires.  Items excluded from the clean up include paint and paint cans, hazardous waste, gasoline, oil and oil containers, kerosene, tires on rims, electronics, yard or grass waste, household garbage and building material.  Freon and doors should be removed from all refrigerators and freezers.

Christmas Open House –  A gift to the community, this event is typically held on Saturday and Sunday, the first weekend of December.  The Moffat mansion is finely decorated for a visit from Santa on his horse drawn sleigh.  There are Christmas carolers, a workshop to make Christmas ornaments and crafts, and complimentary refreshments and gifts for the children.  This event is free of charge. Fishing Derby    The Board of Supervisors, along with the Recreation Committee, have cancelled the fishing derby on Saturday, May 2nd.

This event is free of charge and open to all children 15 years old and younger who reside permanently within the North Pocono School District.  Registration will be limited to the first 150 children.  Children are always welcome to fish at Moffat Pond.  The fishing derby is sponsored by the Recreation Committee and is held at the Moffat Estate pond yearly.  Children are encouraged to demonstrate their angling skills in the freshly stocked waters.

Located at the Moffat Estate, 10 Moffat Drive, Covington Township.  The center is open to all senior residents of the North Pocono area.  Hours of operation are Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday 9 am to 2 pm.  The center’s coordinators work diligently to provide many speakers, activities, games, trips and parties for our elder populace.  Please call the Senior Center for more information (570) 843-6485.
